How to Calculate Percentages
Understanding Percentage Calculations
Percentage calculations are fundamental mathematical operations used in many aspects of daily life, from calculating tips and discounts to analyzing data and financial planning. A percentage represents a fraction of 100, making it easy to compare different values on a standardized scale.
Three Types of Percentage Calculations
1. Finding a Percentage of a Number (What is X% of Y?)
This is the most common percentage calculation. To find what X% of Y equals:
- Convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100
- Multiply the decimal by the number
- Formula: (X ÷ 100) × Y = Result
Example: What is 25% of 80?
25 ÷ 100 = 0.25, then 0.25 × 80 = 20
2. Finding What Percentage One Number is of Another (What % is X of Y?)
To find what percentage X is of Y:
- Divide the part by the whole
- Multiply by 100 to convert to percentage
- Formula: (X ÷ Y) × 100 = Percentage
Example: What percentage is 20 of 80?
20 ÷ 80 = 0.25, then 0.25 × 100 = 25%
3. Finding the Whole When Part and Percentage are Known (X is Y% of what?)
To find the whole when you know the part and percentage:
- Convert the percentage to a decimal
- Divide the part by the decimal
- Formula: X ÷ (Y ÷ 100) = Whole
Example: 20 is 25% of what number?
25 ÷ 100 = 0.25, then 20 ÷ 0.25 = 80
Common Applications
- Shopping: Calculating discounts, sales tax, and tips
- Finance: Interest rates, loan calculations, investment returns
- Statistics: Data analysis, survey results, probability
- Business: Profit margins, growth rates, market analysis
- Education: Grade calculations, test scores, improvement tracking
- Health: Body composition, medication dosages, nutritional information
Tips for Accurate Calculations
- Always double-check which value represents the "whole" or 100%
- Remember that percentages can exceed 100% in some contexts

Converting Between Forms
Percentages can be expressed in different forms:
- Percentage: 25%
- Decimal: 0.25
- Fraction: 1/4 or 25/100
- Ratio: 1:4 (part to whole minus part)
